The oeuvre of Dante and the Divine Comedy in particular represent a high point in Western medieval culture. What is more, its same cruel nature (in the Artaudian sense), which oscillates between the base and the sublime, makes it an important step in the development of Human culture, thus sparking the Scimmie Nude Atelier’s research interest.
Through this play on Dante’s Inferno, the Scimmie Nude Atelier intends to offer a wide-ranging and profound cultural proposition aimed at schools for all ages, libraries, as well as all those social and recreational facilities that offer a cultural programme.
“Rereading the Comedy is like discovering it all over again. In bringing it to the stage, our goal is to stimulate interest in the work through theatricalization, creating a much stronger effect than if it were simply read at a lectern.
For us it is an immense pleasure to be able to work on Dante’s writing. At the same time, it is also a service to society. While we may have studied it distractedly and mechanically at school or subsequently avoided it because it is hard work, it nevertheless represents the core of Italian national culture. And so we believe it should be promoted and studied.
Our choice was to concentrate solely on the Inferno, because it is definitely the most captivating and theatrical part. In particular, we have dealt with cantos I, V, XIII, XVIII, XXVI and XXXIII.
The four actresses are tasked with the great physical and vocal work of translating Dante’s poetry to the stage, rendering its powerful images physically, as well as vocally, to bring the spectators closer to the complexity of Dante’s ‘matter’.
The simple and powerful spectacle relies on the actresses’ fantasy and creativity, their bodies and voices and the empty space, to create the sense of theatre.
This essential and vibrant ‘translation’, together with its strong and engaging atmospheres, make this a unique work, perfect for entering the Dantesque world of the Divine Comedy.”
