After the Trilogy of Research on Man and his intimacy, on which the company has worked for four years, for the first time the Scimmie Nude tackle the relationships between people, between the individual and others. What happens to Man, when he relates with others? What are his reactions? How does he structure his life? The Aliens research project attempts to investigate this conflict, exploring Man’s ability to adapt (or not) to what society forces onto him.
This investigation is carried out with the tools that are typical of the Scimmie Nude artistic direction, who for years, through their own theatrical studio, have analysed Man in order to study his behaviour, his animal reactivity and the reciprocal relationships with the external environment. The form of scenic action developing in this direction is “cruel”. A perverse action, against the coherence of the naturalistic “speech”. The ambition is that of referring to the body that which one would want to say in words. Only our body and the physical contact with other people will allow us to ‘live’, because we do not have a body, we are our body. Again, love and acceptance only can represent a way out from this ancient struggle for achievement and freedom that is becoming more and more similar to furious, blind and desperate egotism.
Often as we walk down the street or travel by train or on the metro, when we are in a crowded public space, a feeling of “otherness” emerges in us towards the others, as if we were surrounded by strangers, by aliens. The six nameless characters of this performance, captivated and lost in a metropolitan choir, start here, from this feeling of individual detachment from others. Our social being and our individual being are two distinct and yet interconnected realities. Our characters search for each other, follow each other, but at the same time avoid each other in absolute indifference and cruelty. They gather close in collective choirs and then abandon themselves to isolation and solitude.
Relationships with other people feed and develop our journey on earth in all directions, and partially determine our personality. The animal Man is genetically programmed not to live alone: we could not be born, grow up, develop feelings and intellect outside a social context. We are at the same time independent and conditioned by others.
Our characters, souls of the world, show themselves in moments of life: love, friendship, politics, solidarity, confrontations and choices but the consciences of our characters, the individual and social ones, often clash. We’ve come to think that the practice of human life is burning itself out in this endless struggle between individuality and sociality. Being for oneself and being for other people depend on each other since they’re at the same time aim and means. We love to think that the conflict and incompatibility of these rival needs do not exclude their mutual bond, and that each determines the other’s life.
In fear of contact with others, so cumbersome and compromising, we objectify social relationships and to protect ourselves from the invasion (alien to us) of others we distance ourselves and dig a trench that cannot but begin a personal war against the world, or worse, a form of indifference that leads to solitude and isolation. We do not wish to feel like we’re merely a cog in a society that does not really represent us, but wish to live a life which we and our dear ones can call our own: that’s why we want to be different, and draw attention on us, even excessively, extremely and weirdly. This kind of behavior will let us survive while keeping our self-esteem.
